The Pflueger President is the best inexpensive spinning reel on the market. This is not an unpopular opinion. At only $60 this reel can be found everywhere from Walmart to high-end fishing stores. There are 5 different models available depending on what test strength and capacity of line you will be running. I run the 30X model which I have spooled with 10lb test power pro braid. It can accept up to 160 yards of 10-pound braid.
The reel is lightweight with the 30X model weighing in at only 8.8 ounces. This weight is comparable to some of the higher-end offerings by Shimano and Penn. Featuring a stainless steel bearing system, the President will be able to stand up to the elements, remaining viable for many seasons. The max drag on the reel is 10 pounds which is more than enough for most mid-sized fish. The drag system is also sealed, which means that the President reel is maintenance-free.
Another feature of the reel that I like is the anti-reverse bearing that can be switched on or off. With the anti-reverse on, the fish on the end of your line will engage the drag of the reel, rather than you back reeling. It is also a convenient feature to have when you need to let a bit of line out to swap lures.
For a new angler or someone who has been fishing for a long time, the Pflueger President is one of the best reels that money can buy under $200. It is lightweight, durable, smooth, and easy to operate. I highly recommend adding one to your collection.
